Next Generation Telecommunications Networks: Privacy and Security Challenges, Standards, Regulatory Interventions, and Policy Framework
Date : Tuesday, November 15, 2022 Venue : Chancery Pavilion Hotel 135 Residency Road, Bengaluru, Karnataka, India
This workshop presented an overview of the range of cybersecurity threats that arise in the context of Wi-Fi sensing and the kinds of personal and usage information that can be inferred by malicious actors. We also reported the results of parallel experiments conducted in India and Australia (at universities in Sydney and IIT Madras) to test the validity and generality of applying Wi-Fi sensing to harvest diverse information. Specifically, these experiments tested the efficacy of Wi-Fi sensing for network traffic classification and spatial monitoring.
The workshop was followed by an interactive exploration of possible counter-strategies and how standards and policies can be developed to reduce the privacy and security threats without impeding potential technological innovations.
(This workshop and the related research are funded by a grant from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Government of Australia, under the Australia-India Cyber and Critical Technologies Program)
